Uninsured driver claim basics
When insurance is missing or unclear, the claim gets more stressful. The first job is to prove who was involved, what coverage exists, and what documents support the facts.
Short answer
Collect the other driver's license plate, driver information, vehicle owner, police report details, photos, witness contacts, and your own policy information. Ask your carrier which coverage may apply and what documents they need.
What to collect
- Photos of the vehicle, plate, damage, scene, and any insurance card shown.
- Driver name, owner name, phone number, address if available, and vehicle description.
- Police report or incident number if law enforcement responded.
- Your own declaration page or policy details if uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may be involved.
What to ask your carrier
- What coverage may apply if the other driver is uninsured?
- What proof do you need from me?
- Do you need a police report, DMV record, or claim denial from another carrier?
- How should I send photos, medical records, repair estimates, and receipts?
Do not let uncertainty scatter the record
Keep one timeline and one document folder. If different adjusters give different instructions, write down who said what and when.
Reporting can still matter
California DMV SR-1 reporting may apply based on injury, death, or property damage thresholds, even if another report was already made.
