Property damage
Rental car after an accident claim
Rental decisions can create surprise bills. Before you sign or pay, get the claim number, approval path, daily rate, coverage limit, and repair timeline in writing.
Ask who approved the rental, what daily amount is covered, when coverage starts and ends, whether you must use a specific rental company, and what happens if repairs take longer than expected.
Questions before you rent
- Is this being paid through my policy or the other driver's carrier?
- Is there a daily limit or total limit?
- Do I need written approval before pickup?
- What class of vehicle is covered?
- Who pays taxes, deposits, insurance add-ons, tolls, fuel, or mileage?
Keep every receipt
Save the rental agreement, extensions, payment receipts, rideshare receipts, repair-shop status messages, and any carrier emails about coverage. If you pay out of pocket, keep proof of payment and the reason you had to pay.
Watch the repair timeline
Rental coverage often depends on repair authorization, inspection timing, supplements, parts delays, and total-loss decisions. Ask the carrier and repair shop to put timeline changes in writing.
A rental issue is a property-damage issue. Injury treatment, missed work, and medical bills should be tracked in their own file.
