Sacramento crash reports: city police or CHP, because the Sheriff does not take them

After a crash outside downtown, plenty of people call the county sheriff. In Sacramento County, that is the wrong office for a collision report.

Short answer

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office does not take collision reports. Inside the City of Sacramento, the Sacramento Police Department does; in unincorporated Sacramento County, CHP does; and in Rancho Cordova, the Rancho Cordova Police Department does. Sacramento County Sheriff SPD reports are typically ready five to ten days after the accident, online, by mail or at two counters. Three agencies, and the Sheriff is not one of them
